Outcome not hours, sign of things to come

Most technology work today is cognitive work - product development, software development and other team based work are hugely cognitive oriented. And a critical criteria for doing creative work at high levels of quality and effectiveness is breathing room - lesser hours of more focused concentrated work.

Various experiments in shorter work week have been going on around the world. Four day work weeks (with the same pay) have been experimented with and even standardized in places like Iceland, Spain and New Zealand.

There is an expectation in creative cognitive work for "workers" to put in more hours. Hours in the weekends. Hours in the evenings and nights. So that "more" might be created. But cognitive work is about creating smart outcomes. And smart outcomes means that they the focus is on the depth of the work rather than the amount of work. Depth matters. And if depth really matters then making space for that kind of work to happen would be the most beneficial.
